Like in most productions, it is very differant from the original text - there is no mushy story ...

I am fond of Michael C.'s work -- I loved Jurassic Park and the Lost World. This book is no differant .. I read it in a day ... short fast good read ..

The real cool part was to understand that how difficult vocalization actually is .. and how easy do we take it to be.

A long time ago, I read it somewhere: "Terrorists are not born, they are created".

How can a human have it lives of millions on his/her concience; unless ofcourse, they are convinced that it is evil. Who amongst us has not killed a bug; or a swatted a fly, because we know that they are bad.

It could be revenge, but that also does not cause a mass killing.

This is not as simple. The executors are blind people; may be even very sick blind people. But they are not as vile as the people who lead them to do such atrocious acts.

If we put ourselves to their situation, we may be even worst; What did Zidane do, in front of the whole world, when he was verbally assaulted.

What happened was very sad. but the problem does not end; by catching a few executors. What we need is to find the real "terrorists". People who may have never lifted a gun, but have killed millions.

We cannot kill these "terrorists" either, as there is a queue in waiting. Someone would replace the one, if they are killed. We need reform. That can only happen, by passive resistance. By love and care. If they are convinced, that killing doesnot help, then and only then would it change.

The change has to come from within. I am not too sure, I am ready for it. But I do think that it is high time now.

I have a long list of todo's: one of them was listed here

Well the idea was pretty simple, just to hook up the RF controller of one the ubiquous RF controlled toys to the parallel port; and use software to run the same.

I did the same - had a latch ( an optocoupler to isolate the parallel port) and passed the same to an AND gate. This was it - the and gate drives the "switches" of the r/f controller; which "drives" the car.

The OS is Linux ofcourse - I used simple outb on 0x378 (o/p port of the parallel port) .. it requires the sudo mode - so what - this is not a POC for some manager - it is fun; in its native RAW form. Will copy the photos soon.

I am just trying to comprehend the power of the powerbox that all of us carry, and it just blows me over .. I mean, just feel the power, we are what we think we are.

Most often than not, we come across idiots who hold themselves in great esteems, and are going places.

And we come across, the sorry, self pitied losers who would wail and cry.

So should every one hold himself/herself, in big esteem, even while they "know" that they are not that good -- I guess this is the point. If you know then you are not holding yourself high enough. Education has been called mass hypnosis before - here we come to more rhetoric knowledge being a wakener from self hypnosis.

The irony of the whole matter is that we decide, where we will be, and yet we ourselves pull us down, its like balancing forces all over again (yin and yang)...

try this, one sunday, think you are feverish - by afternoon, u wld feel lousy.

and then that u are perfectly alright (knowing that u had brought this on you) .. and it goes away.

if our immunity level is in our control .. then what is not ... may be we know too much.

Check out this new media player ... I know all you geeks would say, that I have mplayer.. why do i need another thing ... but read on.

amaroK is a mp3 player. You can make a collection of your music, create playlists etc ... and it would download and cache the lyrics, covers and band info for you; and all from the id3 tags in your music files.

if that is not enough, it would also create a database, which means searching is very easy.

try that out; its worth the effort.

and yes, compile the latest edition .. its called fast-forward ;)

Why My Generation would like to move out of India

Ladies and Gentlemen, believe it or not, the reservation bill is going to pass -- after all which politician (right wing or left wing) would like to see a dip in his/her voter bank.

That would mean that 50% of the seats are reserved, diluting the very obselete education standards.

In a few months from now, we would have another bill, which would give tax ops to private sector companies which have a huge (50%) population as OBC and SC/ST folks.

This would mean that the general population which is well over 75 % of indian youth.

This would be done because it was done in Bihar ( the most backward state in the country ) and south africa ( good model to follow)

Speaking for a larger audiance, we would like to emigrate out while there is still time .. for I would like my kids to study in a "normal" enovirnment, where all are born equal under one God.

Funny. but no so funny. I won't be surprised if any of below is voiced by one of our politician someday.

I think we should have job reservations in all the fields. I completely support the PM and all the politicians for promoting this.

Let's start the reservation with our cricket team. We should have 10 percent reservation for Muslims. 30 percent for OBC, SC/ST like that. Cricket rules should be modified accordingly. The boundary circle should be reduced for an SC/ST player. The four hit by an OBC player should be considered as a six and a six hit by a OBC player should be counted as 8 runs. An OBC player scoring 60 runs should be declared as a century.
We should influence ICC and make rules so that the pace bowlers like Shoaib aktar should not bowl fast balls to our OBC player. Bowlers should bowl maximum speed of 80 kilometer per hour to an OBC player. Any delivery above this speed should be made illegal.
Also we should have reservation in Olimpics. In the 100 meters race, an OBC player should be given a gold medal if he runs 80 meters. There can be reservation in Government jobs also. Let's recruit SC/ST and OBC pilots for aircrafts which are carrying the ministers and politicians (that can really help the country.. ) Ensure that only SC/ST and OBC doctors do the operations for the ministers and other politicians. (Another way of saving the country..)
Let's be creative and think of ways and means to guide INDIA forward. Let's show the world that INDIA is a GREAT country. Let's be proud of being an INDIAN.. May the good breed of politicians like ARJUN SINGH long live.

I am not too sure, if we could ever over come the instinctive comparisons of each other salaries ... and it would take a giant syncronisation lock to actually have every one or almost every one there .. now that most of the folks have wives and husbands and (kids) :)

Comes in a MiG 21 crash, an idiot of a politician, who is assassinated by these young chaps; and delivered to matyrdom.

The sweet revenge comes in the form of a radio transmitted apology... but guys, did anyone tell you that you are in a country where, non-voilence is the key ... and big bangs are never welcome.

The second half of the movie could have been better.

In all this was a movie with great potential, an excellant sound track, a movie to be seen, but this is not something that would be collected.

I think this chap is a great author.

He writes in simple sentences. The humor is unmistaken and there is a pace about his book.

I read 5 point some one - the book about 3 friends @ IIT Delhi (he claims he is one of them, although the iim-a stint just after his iit does no good to his claim)

Anyway, the book is about in his words "what not to do at the iit", or any college - the quircks, jokes, "co-incidences" are well placed - even his "affair" with the pretty daughter of the college prof -- "too perfect" for a plot if you ask me.

But all said and done - a good fast read and you feel good about it. The good part is the book is very easily relatable -- GOOD work there Chetan.

I am now reading the second book - One night @ the call center. Picked it up for Rs95 (catchy yes) ... 70 pages in 1.5 hours, means it is a fast read and the humor is un mistable. Will put up whats this book all about in the next blog.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Saw "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" yesterday -

DISCLAIMER: this may be a spoilt sport - so dont read ahead, if you havent watched the movie and havent read the book and DONOT want to KNOW what this movie is all about.

The movie is relatively accurate to the book, unlike its predecessor ( the third part).

The special affects are awesome - esp. the quidich world cup stadium and dragon flight - but I feel that the movie deserves some more time. I felt that when there is so much spent on the creation of that stadium, it might be worth while to show Viktor Krum fly.

Also the dragon fights only had Harry there... what about the rest of the triwizard champions.

There were a lot of "little" things that were missed out; like the fact that Harry was helped by the house-elf, and not Neville Longbottom, about sea weed.

but apart from the little quirks, that probably only a "Real" Harry Potter fan would observe, the movie is watchable.

I would have liked that Ron and Hermione get their fair credit in the movie too - but they hardly play a part in the movie.

But over all the movie is watchable and may be even collected (if you a are a desperate HP fan) ..

I would give the movie 3.5 out of 5. (remember the 4th book was probably the best in the series so far).

Using SSH for password-less login

I wonder how many folks would have wanted that - and were using insecure expect (tcl) scripts to login.

The problem with tcl, is that you have to store the passwd in clear text. That is inherently insecure - esp. in the NFS envoirnment.

The evil blackhat has to just impersonate your uid and guid to access your 600 (ro) files.

the alternate is to use ssh -but then we have to put in passwds, which is pain in the ass. why cant the server know, that no one really uses my machine; or better still - why doesnt the client automatically send out the passwd (encrypted ofcourse).

the answer is to used ssh and authorised keys.

If you want to connect to you@example.com - u'd need to do the following 3 steps.

$ ssh-keygen -t dsa -f ~/.ssh/id_dsa -C "you@example.com"
Generating DSA keys: Key generation complete.

How to take good photos

I worte a how to on how to take good photos -- inspired by the tutorial by Philip Greenspun at the photo.net
This is incomplete --- but it might help some newbies -- comments are welcome.

1. Do Not take sad photos. No body likes sad photos.

2. Nature photos' depth of focus shd be large -- ie tiny aperture.

3. Portraits, depth of focus small.. have the entire object in the frame.
Get the object to fill the frame; minimal empty spaces, and use something to get the cheer. minimal nose and no shadows of nose or eyes.. that makes the photos sad. use b/w if necessary. -- with females, the hair a a big asset -- use it to blend the skin and atone of the face. -- DONOT worry abt symmetry -- infact an un-symmetric pic is probably going to have better asthetics.
men -- blue shirt, blend with the sky..
children -- brighter the clothes, better the pics.. let the pics be natural -- donot tell them to pose -- just wait for the better opportunity,
same rule applies - if the nature does not offer anything worthwhile, use max aperture.

4. ppl with big tummies :) or ppl who are dis-proportioned(too tall, too thin, too dark or too gora or extremely big eyes), in any way - avoid the dispropotion in the pic, easy way wld be to highlight other features.. anyway i dont have a big lens -- not yet :)

5.Needless to say, with moving obj the shutter speed has to be high, try playing with shutter speed with moving water droplets.. :)

6. stairs, corridors give a very impressive though easy to achieve effect with a thin aperture camera.. the depth of field need to be high here. With tall building, if u take a photo, right from its base,small aperture , the effect will be that of a very large foundation.

7. Animals are usually brilliant subjects, use the eye colors in dogs and cats. Also use a medium depth of field, let the animal blend in its sorrounding. If u take a animal alone, in the frame, it becomes a sad photo. Pets with the "masters" form a happy couple - or so it seems; comment; use the trick.

8. Flowers, large aperture, focus on one object and use the dew for effect. Use skylight, not sunlight and no flash please.

9. Forget abt wildlife and birds and nature scenery with a 80 mm lens.. u need atleast 400 mm to start with.

10. A good photograf is one which would have a feature u are trying to bring out, and supresses all other features.; a girl with beautiful hair and a short skirt; what do u want to show????

11. shadows are not always bad.. they can give u pretty impressive results, but definately not on the things that u want the image to contain.

12. light -- pay attention -- too much light causes eyes to squint. if not in the right direction, it will have shadows under the eyes.

its gonna be like going to the new world -- lets hope it turns out to be good -- I am both excited and scared abt the unknown --- but hope lives on, the eighth spirit is alive.

There has been so much thats' happening/happened over the past 8 weeks... that I can only describe it as "perfect chaos". Actually there cannot be anything that can be perfect ... not even chaos .. but the events .. all in real good sense .. have changed my life.

I am engaged - to a wonderful person. We have decided to spend our lives together.

I will be moving out of current job real soon - and uncertainity, with loads of cash ;), awaits

I have been growing with leaps and bounds technically ... it happens with me a lot... i work on something ... for a real long time nothing moves ... and then suddenly a lightning .. a flash .. and bingo .. the inertia works.

Jamshy is back .. with a +R -R DVD writer. . and i am getting an AMD machine to hack.

I am slowly recovering out of a bad phase of health .. and shd be joining the gym .. getting back to more physical outings...

I just completed 2 wonderful books ... Many Masters, Many Lives... try it out, if death scares you.
The second one is a very light read, called five point someone. This is a class apart .. and my bet is that, if you got a chance to stay in a boys hostel, you would recognize the events with your life -- scary thoughts.

I am back at my annual pilgrimage with the bible -- the zen and the art of motorcycle maintainance.

religion & me

The question that has been bothering me for some-time: Am I a religious person ?

I am a confused person, and this is no exception ... I am not an atheist, but I am not a devout believer either. Let us just say, that I want to be a believer, but am not there yet.

I remember, in the younger days, I used to goto the temple, to see the pious beautiful girls.. Gurudwara used be a haunting place for me for another matter -- (the halwa ) :)

Those days have long gone, as age brings on new things to light, but I am still not convinced that God is anything more than a thing of our imagination - for a better society - But then I would not admit that I am an atheist; for the fear of the wrath.

We humans have always wanted a backup, someplace to go to, and convince ourselves that there is hope. God/religion becomes the ultimate backup -- an explantion for anything, which our limited knowledge does not have an answer too.

If there is an earthquake, it must be the wrath of God -- God punished me with bad grades ... there is a final explanation for every disaster - which is beyond the control of a simpler explanation.

But then, if we look at it a little "un - cynically", is'nt this what an utopian society all about .. where only good towards others is thought of/ acted upon because of the fear of something above the man made laws -- the religion/God ? So religion becomes a strength, a society which is aimed at being "good".

The only weak point in this whole card castle, is the defination of "good" is defined by the people who run this society ... and we arrive at the catch 22 situation of "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?" -"Who would gaurd the gaurds?".

What I fail to understand is this --- How could something that has been written 2 - 4 thousand years ago, applicable, in its entierity even today. More than that, how do we trust the "gaurdians" of the faith, that they have interpreted the text which is not to be understood by the common man.

But then, religion is all about faith aint it ? And so is God, the more faith you'll have, more trust you'll have.

To give it a break, religion is a brilliant concept -- its self righteousness at its best -- let the ppl decide when they have gone wrong, and they will pay for the sins, because they "believe" that they have done wrong !!! Wow !!, talk abt ancient psycological binding.

Hindu's believe in re-incarnation: No one can prove it, or disprove it .. so religion also fits in very nicely, at the edge of reason - where science has no answers (yet).

So, do we actually try and understand, (and that should be very highly celeberated achievements) .. and what we cannot explain, "rationally", the religion covets it as divine ?

The Science and religion being Yin and Yang of our understanding of the events around us :)

But if understanding is what it is about, what is it that really stops me to be a devout pious follower... ? Why is it, that this leap of faith is so difficult, till the time you move over ?

There are too many questions, and too many doubts -- I guess thats the reason, that faith is so difficult for ppl like me.

Angels and Demons

I just completed Dan Browns' Angels and Demons. He has outdone himself in this book. I wont call it a must read, Its more like, if you liked the Da Vinci code, you wld like this one.

I am not a Dan Brown fan, but somehow, thats all I have read in the past few weeks, when it comes to fiction.

There have been some relevations with Angels and Demons, but after reading Digital Fortress, I seriously doubt the sources of Dan Brown's books.

Anyway, the book claims that according to the old science, the elements that make up living human body is Air, Water, Earth and Fire... which surprisingly is the same in the vedas (or so I am told).

I could figure out that, air is what fills the lungs, the water being the life fluid (blood), fire is what keeps the body warm ... but where does the earth come in ?

Had been to Mumbai and Pune over the weekend. This was the first visit to Mumbai, and I loved the energy in the city, thats stops for no, one.. and I did not get fleeced, as it is so popularly shown in the movies.

I have to decide and start working on the Linux project that is supposed to change my life. any ideas ?

I am confused and asking the big question now -- what do i want off life.
This is some gazzilion years so late, but if it consoles - better late than never.

There is sooo much to do; and the art of engineering is just not satisfying. There seems to be a insatiable quest for knowledge. I just cannot get enough knowledge abt computer science alone -- the practical part in me shouts out to stop spending time and money into stuff, which I will have nothing to do.

The human brain is a strange thing - there is a thin line between dreams and halucination. how can you be sure that whatever you are dreaming is not real - reality just is an entity which comes to you when you wake up - till the time you are dreaming - the dream is in a real dimension.

But if the defination of real is so fickle, why is it so important for us to know - why the insatiable quest for knowledge - is it not that I am running after a mirage of reality - this is a oxymoron (mirage of reality).

The only thing that seems to be calming me is Pink Floyd with "Wish you were here".

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell, blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail? A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts? Hot ashes for trees?

I am getting a lot of other lame ideas also -- but I leave most for the rest of the blogs.

Amongst the things happening:

* I am planning to go over to Mumbai next week
* BITS mid-terms are next to next week... but then, my mom did not raise dumb kids. :)
* Work sucks .. but thats not new.
* I had the first of the presentations for Linux Awareness .. poor audiance, but that will get better.
* I took a series of interviews last week and it made me feel so much better abt myself..

will come out with a better idea soon. :)

u know what, I had just realized what happy life is all about -- then I forgot. :))

long time no see

well yes... its been 3 yeeks since I last blogged...and well this is un-natural.

things happened over the past 3 weeks.. which took time <- aint this a classic excuse.... :)

but here is what had happened.

* I went to coorg last weekend. It was awesome. The place was awesome, and while my stomach was full, I was at the edge of whatever little sense of humor that I have :) . You see, I have recently discovered that my sense of humor (SOH) is related to my stomach. The SOH is as alive, as my stomach is full. I guess the ppl who laugh a lot have a goood round tummy. So this is the latest in "growing mota" gyan's that I have... eat more->laugh more->get mota :) .

* I am reading "My experiments with truth, autobiography of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi". For once, he is a great man -- not because of what he did... but because he knew himself. Life is all about knowing thyself, and playing to your strengths.

* Back in India, I have "finally" stopped cringing in the seat of the car, while the driver does some attitude driving. It might sound very "posh" to sound american, but it actually happens.

* I have restarted taking tea.... once a day - thats what I will try and reserve it to that.

* My sis got a job. She may be moving to bangalore.. once she does, I will have to find an apartment for both of us. More responsibility coming my way... I promised myself, I will take life one day at a time.

* yes I picked up digital fortress by dan brown (this is a quick detour. Gandhi, inspired me enough to pick up Gita next). I his booing abt crytography .. all a complete set of BS. I now wonder how much of "truth" is in the Da Vinci code.

* I'll be regular here.

home sweet home

I got an upgrade to a Business class, courtesy Air France, and man it is GOOOOD !!
Paris airport was horrible - i have never seen so many europeans together.

The best was however, at mumbai; courtesy Air India (aka Air Delay, or Delay India). My flight was supposed to take off at 3:40 am. We finally started at 11:40 - just a 8 hour delay: but after a marathon run from boston to bombay - I finally managed to reach home.

After 7 relishing days at home, its back to the work space. The days at home pass real soon - on the treadmill the time seems to stop -- i am a believer in the relativity of time :)

The trip home was full of planned surprises. I survived as a free radical; frantically preserving my bachelor-hood. :) (the details of this gory matter is a differant story).

Hard as I might have tried, I was not able to stay awake post 10:30pm in Delhi. The jet lag continues as a good habit to wake up real early. I plan to start running in the mornings - as soon as I get settled in here.

The good news is that BITS allows me to take 4 courses this time around. So, may be, I can get the credits over by the end of this year. This might help me get over the lost 6 months - but crossed fingers there.

I met Vikas & Mukta yesterday... it feels real good to meet up with old pals.

time to travel

I am travelling back to home tomorrow -- after 4 months here in New England in the US of A.

The trip was fun, short and fun, and we are out of here, before the weather really starts to misbehave.

I had a few impressions about the US before I came over (namely everyone or anyone would be carrying a gun) ... well thats not true.. atleast not true in the area that I am in. Nonetheless, there are a few great things about this country.

The roads - civil infrastructure is out of the world. If we have such roads in India, the economy would grow leaps and bounds (yes I know, if we have a great economy, we will have such roads :) ).

The social security phenomenon.... Thats superb again. Everything you do - is tied together, by this one "secret" number.

As Dharmesh puts it together:
"1. I feel the people in general have not faced competition in true sense
and hence the manners and patience.
2. Lacks the lust of freedom. Everybody sounds happy but aren't. Hence
depression.
3. On a nicer note, lots of resources but not many users, hence the
economy."

But one thing is for sure, this country was made by immigrants who faught to make it happen. The tradition just continues... these are a bunch of hard working people who can achieve anything, if the so deem. A very interesting bunch to live with, work with.

Do I want to come back here...: yes sometime..

Over all there are a lot of impressions -- I am charmed by this place, the speed and the outlook -- the trust and the spirit of ppl. -- but not overcharmed.

and I miss home :)

The last week, was fast.. there were too many things to catch up on.

I leant about the EXIF format: This is a brilliant way to capture image data as a part of the JPEG. The way it goes is, that jpeg is a binary format. Part of this binary file will have the EXIF structure, which holds information like, who created the file, what was the shutter speed, Aperture, ISO, exposure type, WB mode, Flash fired, and a lot of other things that a photographer might need later - when he/she analyses the picture quality.

I wanted to hack this structure, so that, I could manipulate the Camera maker -- so like all "naive" hackers, I opened it with vim, and :%s/Canon/mycamera/gc -- but that wont work.. because its a binary file.. and even though I changed the text, I screwed the jpeg and no imageviewer would open this file.

Anyway, undeterred, I searched google, and it lead me to jhead... (man, what would I have done without google). Jhead is a small application which parses the exif structure, and gives out the info u need, in text. There are a lot of open source image viewers which use the good work that Matthais Wandel did some 5 years back.

I picked up Jhead, and it saved me from reading the 176 page specification for Exif 2.2. Anyway, I found that Jhead does not read all the tags, esp because the code was written in Exif 2.1 timeframes... or even earlier. I added a few things to the code, the tags that it was able to detect, but was not able to identify.. and a few wanted things, like the flash, would now show that flash fired, red eye reduction mode.. and send the changes back to Matthias. (My first serious open source hack :) ). Lets hope Matthias has the time to put it on his website... it was all worth a good time hacking anyway :). Jhead with my changes is here.

The second great thing that I just bumped across was the RSS (Real Simple Syndication). Now I had seen a lot of this rss stuff, but did not know what it was. This is an excellent way to get summarised data, and they use XML for that.

What this does for you can be easily understood by a small application. Say, I want to get news. One way would be to goto the news site, and check for the headlines. The second way would be to subscribe to the rss feed, and whenever the news changes, I will be notified on the change. The best part is that this feed can be put as a bookmark in the Firefox - so all u have to do is click on the bookmark, and it will list out all the headlines.

A lot of things which could work with such changes, like blog, news sites, Slashdot, Linux Journal have rss as a feature. Surprisingly, google news does not have RSS. My suspcions are that there is something going on abt this at google labs, but then thats google.

The snow is here, but lucky for us, we are out of this place, and back in warm India on friday.

Anger Management

What is Anger? When do you get angry? And last but not the least, how do you avoid getting angry?

We all know that Anger blinds us from making a controlled reaction; instead we do things that we would have normally not done. But where does all this uncontrolled energy come from ... I mean, no logical person would react ir-rationally -- just because he fancies to. It has to have the same inertia build up - and then in the weakest of moments, there is the uncontrolled release of energy (also known as anger).

The wise would diffuse this build up while it is happening. So u never really reach the point where you can release the energy.

What about the rest of the low mortals... how do we control anger
As I percieve, anger is built of 2 stages
1. when somebody attacks me, I get my defenses high.
2. once i have my defenses high, i would respond aggressively ( or angryly ).

One of the ways to control anger would be to "laugh out", so that the stage when my defenses get high diffuses. but how easy is it?? There has to be something better than walking out of the room, and who's gonna tell you that you have to laugh out now.... its just a devil inside you that tells you to .. $^%*^%&$&@$#@ the @&#(*&#(&@ . And after doing that, while, you might feel miserable, the devil (aka male ego) is happy that you really nailed the (&()&#&@.

But all of us know that this is not right, so it has to be tamed, and controlled. So what to do ?? any ideas are welcome.

I have been tolerating Orkut's lousy design for some time now... but today I just lost it, when I could not even add a second photo. I have sent them a bug report... like a good member. I just hope they respond.

I am not a poineer in software design, but I can tell the differance between good and bad software design.. and orkut is close to the bottom in the list. I really wonder why google ever decide to share their good name with some crap as orkut. I understand guys that the orkut is a beta.. but look at gmail for once.. that one is also beta. The idea of a beta distro is to make sure that it works, and the quarks are abt to be ironed out. Orkut is slow!!

black friday

The day after thanksgiving is called black friday, and not without a reason. The black friday is a sale - stores offer massive discounts, crowds line up to take the loot.

This black friday, we reached the store at 5:30 hoping that there will be 50 - 100 ppl in front of us. When I reached there, there were a 800 strong crowd who were patiently waiting to start shopping - men women and children, all waiting for the phenomenon - "the store gates to open". What was more suprising than the strength of the crowd was the fact that the crowd was well behaved... no pushing, etc. etc.. that we get to see so often at home.

Anyway, I was poorer by about 600 dollars (alas) .. by the end of the day, and the rampage had left me with no doubts about human psycology when it comes to sales -- "grab 'em cheap" :)

Ram gave me the long sought after link for Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintainance. This is a bible, I indend to visit every few months. And if you have not read this book, pick it up, its an eyeopener, if it does not change your life.

Am going thru the sicp videos - part 2b. This is also very inspirational. The fundamental idea is that of "wishful thinking". Professor Sussman threw out the idea of design first and implement later... he was more like, defer dependency till it can be deffered, but be aware that procastination is evil.

It seems that there is so much to do but hardly enough time for all this. Damn !!!

life @ 100mph

Yesterday, i touched 100 mph on the Toyota Camry LE, that I am driving these days. 100mph -- 160 km/h; wow that was thrill.

I was coming home from dropping a town 30 miles north, and the road was empty, it was like 3 miles of nothing-ness right in the middle of nowhere. Well, I stepped on it, and the Toyota responded -- beautifully, if I may add ... climbing upto 5500 rpm, as the speedometer climed, both me and my partner pushed into the bucket seats...

was it dangerous..; well it was worth the thrill :)
would I do it again; probably not on a 65mph highway :)

I listened to the full song.. Lady by Lenny Kravitz. Its avl on Lenny's official website. Click here to listen to the same(windows media player version :( ). The song was featured in the GAP ad, which had Sarah Jessica Parker (yes from the Sex and City fame) and Lenny himself on his classic guitar. What can I say abt the song .. this is Lenny.

Anyway, Vikas inspired me to change the famous 3 letters (TBD), to a lesser known 3 letters DIY (Do It Yourself) :). Either way, the bottomline is that this list is growing.

The good news is the demon called the Linux kernel is finally coming under control, and I am getting the "hollistic" picture of the entire thing. Vikas, Basa, u guys be prepared for the series of sessions that we'll have, once i am back. I am beginning to understand, what Karthick said in his notes :)

The bad news is that I am not understanding why I have so many problems with ppl. I need to learn self management skills - to deal with some of the category. esp. the classic underperformers with a superiority complex that breaks thru the roof... somebody shd be telling them that they are mere mortals. Any suggestions are welcome -- including the more physical ones :)

cold cold snow

Friday evening (yes diwali day), we had our first snow - and it was bad, 4 inches of it.

Cars covered up, trees stripped bare of what was left of the fall. Saturday morning was a bright sunny day, sun shining down on the white snow.. it was bloody great.

This gentle leaf was there on the patio, as if a cradle for the virgin snow. Could not resist taking this snap, using V's Olympus.

Any way, Saturday and Sunday were "cold" reminders of the days to come.

During the weekend, I went thru some more of the Linux MM code and SICP video lectures part 1b. If programming excites you -- you got-to go thru these... If they can compare recursion to bureaucracy... :) God bless the MIT.

The metaphysics of belief

Doesnt it bother you that, we are who we believe we are!!

Now this is strange... but this is how it works for me. Nothing really comes easy to me. I have to work hard, really hard before things come to me. And it is not an overnight effort -- it is more like, I work at this subject like a newbie for a very long time, and then suddenly one day; boom !! I know it.

For the longest time, I attributed this to inertia. The property of any body to need some energy before it comes to life.. we see it every day, the 0.7 volt on a silicon transistor, or the flaming point of objects, or the little extra acclerator that u need to push, before the car rolls on... This analogy can be attributed to learning.. u know u work hard, and only after some linear growth, there is exponential growth.

But, is it true??

It could also be that we just need time to believe in ourselves that we know. If we believe in the fact that we know... than we know(or atleast the mind thinks so), and the other factors like confidence etc.. just roll in.

Now they say that, while the wise know that, they dont know it all; the fools live in the sunshine of not knowing that, they dont know it all....

Coming back to the original subject, if knowing is believing - was gravity created by Newton. We know it always did exist but did Sir Issac Newton, tie down each one of us to Earth? So the bigger question is that is Science really restricting us -- rather than letting is goto untold heights.

More importantly, is immortality just short of an imagination. We know that placebo's work. I had a great grandmother, who lived up to 106. She was smoking unfiltered cigarette all her life; guess no one bothered to tell her that smoking is injurious to health. For her last few years, she had asked my GrandPa to get her some medicine, for fatigue... They gave her empty capsules. It worked!!!!

The body responds to what the mind thinks!!!

So if I believe; and I mean I believe it inside me, that I know something -- and I have been working towards it... dont I just simulate the "inertia" ...

But why is it that for some ppl, things come very easy... the IQ factor -- what is the IQ factor.. has it got to do with the self-belief coming easier??

could it be that the entire philosophy of "knowing", be around this milestone called the belief cornerstone ?

believe it to find out.

Seriously .. this was a differant weekend; my first haloween here in the western world. The good part was the little angels, the kids, in all those costumes and face colors -- they looked incredible.

I spent some time on linux MM and finally an image is beginning to emerge from the shadows. I still find it cryptic, but there is a block structure which is coming out, like a 10,000 miles top level view.

It was my managers daughters birthday on saturday.. so good food :) and sunday was a a lazy day -- good warm, sunny lazy day :) (man i miss home)

Its Now official, I know nothing about shopping. I dont know, but I think most men feel the same way - helpless; when it comes to "complicated" affairs like shopping. It gets worse, if you need to buy for someone else. The only "silver lining" is when I need to buy electronics; I may not need advise.

My mantra (or call it a classic excuse) is: shopping is evil; spending is evil... Dont follow this guys, or the worlds economy will come to a depression; but then we have women, dont we.... so is it that, women drive the world economy??[BIG QUESTION]

I just had to buy a present for a little girl who has her birthday, over the weekend, and four of us(incidently guys) are brainstorming over what to gift her. The best possible solution(and the only one too), we come to gift her a doll. That is miserable, compared to the list of options, I got when I asked another friend who is a girl.... Man are we pathetic or what??

Is it that this is a part of the X chromosome that we are so deprived off.. or is it just ignorance.. I dont know... shopping is still evil for now. :)

Man, I never thought it would come out to this.. its tuesday, and I am already waiting for the weekend.

Last weekend, I was a home.. a cold new england weekend - what could you expect. I had dinner at a friends place...; and listened to some korn stuff. So this is what happened over the last few weeks:

* While the fall lasted, we cruised and covered most of new england.
* I have driven so much on the "right" side of the road, I dont know how confused will I be back home :)
* I just cant get enough sleep. (not that i am not sleeping enough.. but i am lethargic through out the day)
* I am still talking to that intelligent person in Pune.
* I need to "start" exercising "again", its too cold to run in the open.
* Am looking for a makeover; something that will change the way I think. May be I should read the "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintainance" again.

Na, dont take me for a baseball fan... I am not... but what amazes me is how sports becomes a religion.... Differant sports, differant cultures ; same fanatacism.

Red Sox had a "curse" after they traded Ruth to the NY Yankees. This year was the redemption of the curse, and NY licence plate cars were burnt in seperate incidents in Boston .... reminds me of Eden Garden when there is a India Vs Pakistan match...

What I dont understand is that if we so same, why the differance in the first place... say a Yankee fan would be feeling as proud, if the NYY were winning - but what is it that makes us blood pump; by seeing the other party defeated.. May be the monkey genes are not dead as yet :)

I went to Boston last weekend, and that place was pretty... like living history. Is there a way to have a photo blog -- I went through Nat's blog (nat.org) and man that guy travels... Anyway, is it possible to have a photo blog like NAT ... answer's invited to my email (see profile) or just put it in the comments section.

total redemption

Some days, I need to drive some 40 miles to office. I dont really complain about it -- I have a Chevvy Malibu and its a beautiful car.... :)

Day before yesterday, there was a lot of fog when we started, visibility being hardly 100 yards.. but as we came on the freeway, the sun started to come through. In a pure moment of bliss the mist lifted across the red "october" earth. I can hardly describe the moment -- imagine yourself at 75 mph; fall colored countryside passing your window - and there it is the mist rising as the the Sun "shines through on the wet highway. I "was" a believer all over again :) .

Been a little tied up off late - but these were the happenings....
* I have been talking to this great person in Pune, but I have been such a bore. (God give me some of sense of humor.. or just restore some of which I had :) )
* vikas also joined the bloggers lounge ( pandita.blogspot.com)-- welcome dude :)
* I was going through Prabhu's website -- and it is out of the world.. Gooood Work there.

* and yes, I met up with 2 ppl here, who have the same technical bent of mind. There is one in India.. All of us can write an operating system, if we try ..., if we just try. ("Self dabba") :)
* Jamshy bought a new canon rebel digital -- yes its EOS 300D - and he has started with concept pictures.
* Am reading "The Monk who sold His Ferrari" amongst many things. That guy writes sense. I get the most perfect defination of Luck. Its a marriage between opportunity and prepration. Makes sense huh!!! So you think it is air that you are breathing now ?

Sometimes we underestimate the potential of our ideas. One such thing was @ infy, when we had thought having internet news groups (comp.os) mirrored at a local news server. Natty, Vikas, Prabhu, believe me it takes you to a differant plane when you read that. Try for that, or you could do that home ..

well it does happen, for a lot of ppl. I just travelled, from bombay (first time) to paris (again first time) to nyc (again first time)... and for those of u who have read the Inscrutable Americans, I tell ya my response to the NYC was the same as poor Gopal ( jaw wide open :) ). I have been born and brought up in Delhi (regular city guy), but thanks to bollywood, was almost paranoidly afraid of Bombay ( nothing happened, touch wood... I have to go back the same way :) )

Can almost write a book abt the wonders of NYC, but more on it later..

poor man's government

I wanted to write abt this for a very long time - i dont know why I dint actually go ahead and write the same.

The current Indian government and their claim being the poor man's government. How do you define poverty. If not having food and drink is being poor and rest all are rich, then the government is busy working towards converting all of us.
The petrol price in Bangalore is 42 Rs/litre. Thats roughly 97 cent a litre.. I am sure it is cheaper in the US, and remember guys, we get paid in rupees. A well paid Software guy would be getting roughly a $800 or less... what about the rest of the folks (they are still eating (rich) )

After the govt has come in, the petrol price has increase, the taxes have gone up by 2%, the provident fund interest has gone down, the "feel good" factor of the last govt. has evaporated... the markets are down... inflation at all time high and infrastructure, well do I need to talk about it.... Azim Premji, has said that they are not looking at Bangalore as a potential center of growth, as the govt with their nefarious games have stopped major steps by the last govt.. .

So tell me, what is it that the govt has promised that it will achieve and why is this a poor man's govt. Mr Prime Minister, it is the tax payers money that you use when you give out free electricity!!!

We never had 3 techno-crats at the driving seat of this nation (or probably any nation)... Imagine having 3 PhD's being the finance minister, the prime minister and the president !! May be they are right when they say that too many cooks spoil the broth.

dance on the rock

I went rock climbing yesterday... its was with a group of friends... I was a first timer but there was ultra fit, ultra modest junta over there who would just "dance on the rocks"...

tell you what, i was not prepared... physically, mentally.. but managed the nursery climbs (which i am happy about) but there were these modestly built creatures who clung on to the rocks like they were the next logical extenstions to the same...

when you are on the rock (even the nursery ones) there is this rythm.. this pulse that goes thru the entire body.. it is as if the whole earth is bonded to your limbs.. there is an increased sense of being alive...

the little things.. like small flowers, tiny ferns or even blood sucking insects.. they become so much prominent... very unlike a mundane urban day..

i am not too sure, how good will i be at it.. but one thing i do know is that i liked being there yesterday and would like to repeat it...

the next time i will take my slr along...

back from home

Well what happens if you have 6 days at home after 8 months of work, and you spend most of these 6 days not doing what you planned all along.. plus the stress associated with the fast receding time...

u waste most of it (the time) fighting the unmovable force that is taking the time away from you, slipping away like the fistful of sand..

the trip was a disaster.. I faught with myself, behaved like a 6 year old.. who would try to be big.. They say when you are home, you are emotionally secured and so the masks that you use with the world outside are not as apparent.

may be I have lived away from home for so long that I have to mature my "unmasked self".

any way, I dont like my unmasked self -- and you cannot lie to yourself.

completed the Z&AMM. Beautiful. Need to read it again to understand the persuation to read/write such stuff.

Saw Laskshya on Sunday.. nice movie - good music, Hrithik is a great dancer...
"Agar mein kahon" has a nice base riff

Amitabh Bachan could have demanded a better role.. this movie was tailor made for the Hero himself .. but Farhan Akhtar has done a reasonable job.. not so mushy, and funny... But Dil Chahata Hai was a whole differant story.

Guess I could identify with the confused part of the Hritik' pre-college days.. Damn it is good to be rich... that way u dont have to worry abt so many things, for so many years.

The good part of the movie was resemblance with the real life.. like the fact that Priety plays a Journalist with her name "Romilla Dutta", the name and hairsytle uncannily similar to Barkha Dutt... remember she was at Kargil. Hrithik plays Capt Shergill who has to capture peak 5179.

and yes I plan ask my cousin( in Army), posted in Jammu, if he can accomodate a holiday for me and my Canon EOS SLR.

Yes I am talking about the Lord Vishnu aka Balaji aka Tirupati, the creator of the Universe, The Lord of all Gods

I went to the Tirupati temple over the weekend, half hoping to get the darshan... I guess the Lord was just testing my faith.. and I failed :(

Religion can be such strength or such weekeness.

It was as if the entire ocean of humanity was ready to go through the claustrophobic chambers to get to the Lord (a 8 second darshan) .. which requires a 48 hour wait and 4 hour in one of the most tightly packed places on earth.

Anyway, I came back early.. i just was not ready for that kind of a test... may be some time in the future.. not now.

Wrote some gcc startup scripts to cut down the size of the executable be half (atleast the hello world program) .. as for the rest, bad bad weekend.

I remember seeing the movie and I was just mesmerised by the same -- it can be called a classic music band theme.. but Tom Hanks in his directorial debut -- and what can you expect!!!

Kerela trip and Phaedus

I was off on a road trip to Kerela, yes the God's own country.. (and not so without merit).

I wanted a weekend getaway, away from crowds, and noise or talk or music or anything that is human - be with myself. I cannot afford that (yet) but did manage to goto Kerela, in a small hilltown in the foothills of Nilgiris'. It was quiet (period).

You wont believe, after how long did I listen to crickets, or see fireflies, or just heard myself breathe. No cell phones. No computers. Just me and my friend. I was a guest at their home, for the nights.. the days, we just roamed around in the nearby getaways, away from the tourist circuits.

And here thoughts come to realization. Thoughts about the life, the way it is supposed to be and the direction(s) it is leading us to.

Humans by nature, are explorers. We are never content with what we have. We have to show our greatness, by putting things in order. Nature on the other end has entropy increasing. So right now, when we are sitting in the perfect cubes of houses and sell maintained lawns outside... great roads... fast cars... perfect lines.... we, humans, Nature's greatest creation, are against its very principle.. randomness... (and the irony does not stop here) we try to find perfect order in perfect randomness.

Kerela, is also a very tiny microcosm. Keralites are intelligent, hardworking ppl spread through out the world... and that brings in a lot of NRI money. Even in the smallest of towns, you would find Shopping Mall's and showrooms. Big Hoardings' are almost completely dominating the otherwise well maintained roads... I neednot remind you that Kerela has tropical climate, so it rains for 6 months a year.

The microcosm does not stop there. Nearly people from all religions live here. There are Muslims and Hindus and Christian, Jews and what not (hint.. N. Modi, stay away from this wonderland)... and guess what almost 99% of the junta is actually educated...

what really surprised me was that this place has been actually governed -- or almost misgoverned by the left (Communist Party) for the last so many years. Now thats something that does not actually fit in the picture very well...

However, coming back to the topic at hand; I was there for a weekend. I loved it. I am not too sure when it will be, but I am going back there. I am told that the tourist circuits are very expensive, so if you dont know Malayalam, be ready to shell out a lot of cash. As for me, I have Phaedus to guide me.

We had the Linux Expo at Infosys yesterday.... (InfyLug Expo) -- not surprisingly I was there, expo'ing the Kernel Korner...

I had a kgdb setup, a LTT demo and an SMP setup to expo.. kexec would have worked out but only with a little more effort.

Had to talk and stand the entire day (Ladies' at the Auto Expo in Delhi; I truly understand how difficult your job really is).

and man there are all kind of ppl in the World.. some of them, just interested in the buzz world -- u give them high performance computing (clusters) or something like a remote development and debugging envoirnment (kgdb); they are like gala on that -- not knowing or understanding the complexity or simplicity with that...

I was at office over the weekend.. breaking my head to configure the kgdb ( kernel debugger for Linux ).
It took me 2 days but when it finally worked, I touched the roof....

it is not a very difficult thing to do, but with limited documentation and a lot of unresolved symbols ( why ??? I dont know... My best guess is that these are gcc version problems ), I had to dig into the the k.code and fix it.

Then there was a drama with the crossover null modem cable...

finally the setup works :) I can debug the kernel from a remote machine..... on the test machine... Damn I need a SBC at home.. and then the possiblilites would be truly endless................

It is after such a long time that i felt when this worked... The 8th spirit is not yet dead...

Had a blast this weekend...

over the last week, Bangalore has been blessed with showers and in the middle of summer, the temperature has been behaving ( below 20 ) for the best part of the day. Lord Indra has also been smiling, so there was hardly any sun....

The weekend, was just another co-incidence. It was the perfect time for a really long drive ( yes on my yam ).

I went to one of my mom's cousin's place. She had been pestering me to come over for a long time... but she was too far off(~35 km one side) and I was lazy.

I had gone to one of my friends place, and from there, I went ahead to my maasi's place.

Now I had never seen her before... She is living in the Air Force Base, with her husband and kids. btw, I dint know abt the kids too.

But reaching there, I had a blast... I made soap bubbles with the kids... we drew cartoons... I had forgotten how much fun it is to make soap bubbles... if this was not enuf; there was great food on top of it.

Sunday, was another welcome day.. with half a day of riding around in the town....

What a weekend.. :)

I can talk about open source, but now is not the time. Today is a day to celeberate my freedom ( its is short lived ) over the terror/fright/anxiety/pressure of exams. Yes sir, the same old demons that came in and spoilt your cradle days. Some ppl just never get old.

6 months ago I had this (brainless) idea that I shd get back to studies (with work). I am at both of them, and tell you way, work is easy; studies are much harder; or may be I am plain an old chap. So I registered for the MS course, where I had these "open book" tests this weekend. Needless to say I was screwed. I hate open book tests.... for a long time now.

What is done is done; but for now, as soon as the next weekend sets in, it is time for a break (some sun and some beer).

Marriage at 26

I am 26(old) and marriage is the talk of the town. Its like a religion and custom and tradition and season and "the thing to do" all put together. All the relatives/friends around would just want to talk to me about the same thing. It is as if batchmates were like raw plums and they are just falling to matrimony... it started with the females and as if it were contagious the spread continued to the "dudes". It is almost funny, the way it is - u meet this guy, and he tells you that he is getting married(out of the blue) and u almost feel sorry for the female...

Most of them are rather classical typical arranged marriage, and people would just decide on spending their lives together (and rather happily so) -- just like that!!!! This universe is rigged alright....

I have a simple question. Our custom would strictly be against a kind of one night stand, wherein a man meets a la femme in a party and both end in bed. How differant is the arranged marriage from that -- expect that u wld spend the entire life...

And the elders would say "beta u must get settled in life".. Give me a break, I was never more in control of my life - I have a decent job, like what I do and if that is not enuf, I dont have to worry, where will I spend my next saturday night.

This is from an old blog; tht this was interesting.... one of the very few writings, where I dont read my insecurities.

There this movie called "Forces of Nature"; Sandra B. plays a wild female in the same. Whatever, she played, the character had energy flowing out of her. She was "what can I say" amazing !!! Like my roomie, I am not too sure, that I cld keep up with someone like "her", if such a person were to exist in my life... but sure as hell I would like to be her.

The character had problems, like everybody else ... but her metabolism rate was way beyond my own.... who wouldnt want to be on top of a train at the remotest of the hinterlands; and shout out "I am alive" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

its been long, but the good news is that I am back.

There was a lot to learn, these past weeks, not only technically, but also psycologically (abt myself).

life is beautiful, aint it. even with its jinxed approach; the beauty, the ever so constant momentum that life has, never ceases to astonish me. it just goes on - waiting for no one - altered by no one - constant - moving - a force - energy - like a flux; just going on and on - unknown to where is the destination - impartial to highs and lows - just goes on. Why am i even trying to contemplate the incontemplatable. May be its the living sprit, which never ceases to astonish itself, or may be its just that I am so miniscule even with my thoughts, that I cannot even imagine the size or momentum this giant has.

yet, life is so unpredictable.

tell me truly; do you believe in fate ?
I dont like the idea of somebody in the "heavens" having time or energy to contemplate the system of universe and pre-writing the thing(s) we do. In that event no one can stop the predetermined -- get real. I cannot explain some phenomenon -- but so what ; that only proves that my langauage or the science that I know is incomplete. It definately does not mean that there is a fate associated with it, or may be there is but it just does not gel up with the idea of life, which is so unpredictable.

i can keep on writing on this one; but guess what this is my perception ( and also my blog :) )

No it is more than that, and it affects all; the extinct and the surviving.

The chaos theory states that those who are at the edge of chaos will survive the winds of change.
Those who are too calm, wont be ready when change comes, and those who are too chaotic, will fail to evolve and pass away. It also states the inevitable. Change will come. Actually it never ceases.

But what is the relevance to humans. We seem to have control over the inveitable and all the glory associated with science and technology.

The relevance is much greater than it seems.... all the business organizations, the society at large is living, and for it to survive, it needs to be at the edge of chaos (a big organization shd be like a war-ship nimble as a fast boat, as Jack Welch had put it).

It is not just the business, but our whole social structure is chaotic in nature, although all of us would want perfect peace, perfect allignment.

yet the irony is that we are at the edge of perfect chaos.

so what is it with us and perfection. as kids we are taught of the perfect 10, but is anything perfect ??
The entropy(randomness) of the universe is increasing; yet we are aiming at perfect order. Are we not at conflict with the basic nature of the universe?

may be thats what is being at the edge of chaos all about, being torn with conflicts; ready for anything (almost), except for the realization that we are there.

I would have liked to write about why I like the concept of chaos; but I guess, I guess its for my friend Sujith and his page that I also feel forced to write about my bike. Well I have a Yamaha, its a rat bike of sorts, my medium to go around the city, and yes I depend on her.

I wish I cld share the same passion about bikes that Sujith has, come to think of it I can hardly think of a reason why I shd be talking abt the same. Thats just another mechanical piece, that works, because it is supposed to work - thats the entire reason to its entity --- but then there is that thrill that goes when the wind blows thru the hair -- there is that rush when I am cruising, at untold speeds (see If i see the speedometer, who will see the road :) , and when ppl see me whiz by.

But yes its the ode to the engineers at Yamaha who have created the "perfect" piece of h/w.

its an ode to all you designers and the creative talent of humans at large.

The good news is that the ppl at my office have finally shown us some sunlight(of hope) and we have now 2.66 GHz P4 boxes with half Gig RAM. I threw out the Windoze it came with. This machine is now working on the 2.6.0 Linux kernel with the pre-emptive option selected. All you geeks would be shouting 2.6.2 is out -- ya ya; i'll apply the patches.

The diary does not want anything from you. It does not care if you are tall dark or pretty . All it cares is that you be able to visit it once a while.
